‘The End Is Now’ is a multi-faceted, ambitious track from London-based five-piece HMLTD. The apocalyptic track blurs the line between 70s soul and folk, with beautiful melodies and sudden changes of direction keeping things interesting throughout. It isn’t just complex in a structural or arrangement sense, though, with the band not shying away from seriously left-field rhythmic and harmonic choices. Their latest single “tells of how the titular Worm was finally awoken by hydraulic fracking of the English countryside, and swallows England whole. The Worm here is both a metaphor for capitalist greed, and the embodiment of a whole generation's anxiety, dread and fear in the face of ever-looming apocalypse and world-ending natural disasters.” The band are releasing their sonically ambitious second album, The Worm, on April 7th, 2023. -Dan Peeke
